Reliability
In my final practicum, I made sure to be someone the children, my mentor, and other ECEs could rely on. I worked hard to set a positive example for the children and always did my part to support the team. This helped build trust and teamwork.
Punctuality
I showed up on time every day and stayed consistent in fulfilling my responsibilities. This not only created a stable environment for the children but also ensured that everything in the program ran smoothly.
Communication Skills
With children: I used simple words to communicate with children and build strong relationships. I talked to them during play, guided them when solving conflicts, and showed empathy by acknowledging their feelings.
With co-workers: I made sure to keep good communication with my mentor and other ECEs. I shared what I observed about the children, asked for advice when I faced challenges and checked with them to make sure I was on the same page as the team.
Problem-Solving
I practiced solving problems as it happened. When I didn’t understand what a child needed, I asked my mentor or a colleague for help. Through that, I learned the importance of teamwork.
I also adapted to changes, like swapping shifts with my partner when they couldn’t work their usual hours.
Contributions to the Team
I worked closely with the team to meet shared goals. I helped manage children’s behaviour during hikes, bus trips, and picnics. I also provide opportunities for children to learn to dress themselves during transitions and ensure their safety in all activities.
When staff were short, I took on extra tasks, like helping during nap time. I also made an effort to create a positive and respectful work atmosphere.
Guidance
I helped children deal with conflicts, guiding them to understand others’ feelings and find solutions. For example, I used the story of The Rainbow Fish to teach children about sharing. While the story emphasizes the joy of sharing, I also wanted to convey that it’s okay not to share if they don’t feel ready. I encouraged the children to express themselves confidently and respectfully by saying, “Stop! I am using it, and I don’t feel like I want to share now.” This approach helped them understand their feelings while also promoting respectful communication with their peers.
